I had no interest in being a life coach when I went to my first coach-training weekend. Why? I didn’t know the answer until two hours before the end of that weekend when I started to believe that I could be successful as a life coach. Before that, I couldn’t let myself want to be a coach because I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to support myself.
I had always worked at a job with a salary (in my case in the optical business making and selling eyeglasses). I was not particularly daring or entrepreneurial. I didn’t love the idea of trying to convince people to buy my coaching. What changed my perspective?
We did an exercise where we practiced inviting people in the class to be our coaching client. I was awkward and uncomfortable and excited. I realized that all I had to do was be willing to talk to people about coaching and ask if they were interested. I believed I could do that. And I loved coaching more than anything I’d ever done. I experienced my fellow students and the coaching process as coming home and belonging. It was two years from having that realization until I was able to quit my optical job and be a coach full time.Creating a coaching business didn’t and doesn’t happen overnight. I had to keep talking to people and getting my coaching seen in front of groups. I had to develop my skills and get more confident. As challenging as the process was, I can truthfully say that on my worst days as a coach I never wanted to go back to my old profession.
If I can do it, you can do it. Will you let yourself want to be a coach and start the process today?
