It sustains the activity of every living organism on the planet.
It keeps every cell in your body alive.
You can manage it, share it and deplete it. And when it’s out of balance, you might say you feel sick, sad, down or out of it.
We’re talking about energy. Some people balance it through exercise, others through meditation. Energy healers help people attune it through the sacred practice of Reiki.
The Origin of Reiki
Reiki is one of the most popular types of energy healing in the world. The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words – Rei which means God’s wisdom or higher power and Ki which is life force energy. Thus it is said that Reiki is spiritually guided life force energy.
Reiki reduces stress and promotes healing. It is practiced by people of all religions and in different forms. It involves the laying on of hands.
The system of Reiki was developed by Mikao Usui in Japan in 1922 during a Buddhist Training Course on Mount Kurama.
Components of a Reiki Session
There are two main types of Reiki: Traditional Japanese Reiki and Western Reiki. The components of a session vary based by practitioner but a few things are usually standard:
•The patient remains clothed and the practitioner places hands near or lightly touches parts of the body, including the head, shoulders, stomach, legs, and feet
•Patients report feelings of deep calm, and some drift off into relaxing states
•Sessions can last from 5 minutes to more than an hour
Facts About Reiki
New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Campus conducted one of the first studies to determine the effectiveness of Reiki treatments on the autonomic nervous system. Today Reiki is being used at the Columbia University Medical Center Integrative Therapies Program for Children with Cancer. And here are a few other interesting facts:
•According to the American Hospital Association, over 800 American hospitals offer Reiki as part of hospital services
•A study done in 2007 by the National Health Interview Survey says 1.2 million adults and 161,000 children received one or more sessions of energy healing therapy such as Reiki in the previous year
