We all hold tension from stress in our bodies — holding life’s frustrations deep in our tissue. Vocal sounding play can provide a fun and powerful way to give voice to these frustrations — releasing them and freeing ourselves to transcend our own limitations!
The following simple exercise is something you can do to release pent-up emotions, negative feelings, or parts of the inner “shadow.”
Lay down on the floor, letting your weight drop and your body be supported completely. Breathe deeply, feeling your back expand. When you exhale, allow your vocal chords to gently come together, releasing a voiced sigh: “Haaaahhhh”. Breathe in through your nose again, and allow the next exhalation to be even longer. Do this for many breaths until you start to feel tensions in your body dissipate.
Once you’ve gotten used to making gentle, relaxed sounds, then have a little vocal play. Try expressing some of your worries and fears using wordless sounds. Scrunch up your face tight and make a high-pitched whining noise. Then swish your tongue around the outside and inside of your mouth making all kinds of silly sounds with your tongue and saliva. Imagine all the complaints, concerns and fears you have about your life and give them vocal expression!
Allow these sounds to lengthen into a long extended tone you hold for as long as you can sustain comfortably. Repeat this as many times as it feels good to do so.
Eventually, contain these tones into in a hum by closing your mouth. Send the hum’s vibrations inward and let this hum fill up your entire body.
End by lying for a few minutes in silence, allowing the hum to still resonate silently within the body.
You may be surprised at how fun it is to release negative emotions through sound. By expressing them they can be transformed into something more positive and you may just feel lighter and freer!
