Are you not getting enough good quality sleep? Do you love your water bed. Do you love the security of the baby monitor in the nursery? Isn’t Internet access wirelessly from anywhere in the house a terrific technical innovation? What about the cell phone system antenna you can see from a bedroom window? Or what’s the implications of the cordless DECT phone in your neighbors apartment just on the other side of your child’s bedroom wall? The wireless age requires new understanding and awareness to be able to protecting yor health and your children’s health.
Larry Gust from the Institute of Building Biology and Ecology® (IBE) says that “Your bedroom is your first line of defense against the negative consequences of a polluted world. It should be a healing place not a stressful place. Sleep is the time when your body’s defenses are lowered, while your body focuses on healing and rejuvenation. Providing your immune system with the appropriate sleeping environment to allow maximum effectiveness in repairing the body keeps you healthier, and helps you fight off illnesses more rapidly.”
It is time to be aware of what we can’t see. The wiring in the walls of our home as well as power supply cords to lamps, clocks and other common electrical gadgets puts energy into the air that’s 10 to 500 times the ideal level. Wireless communications devices purposely pollute the air with energies that never existed before WWII.
Did you every in your wildest dreams think that man-made electrical energies interfering with your desire to get some needed and well-earned sleep? They are. Certified Building Biology Environmental Consultants trained by Institute for Building Biology and Ecology have demonstrated since 1986 that elimination of these man-made pollutants improves sleep and boosts health and healing.
There is a large body of evidence showing Electromagnetic Radiation is harmful to health. Exposure to man-made electrical pollution is linked to increased risk for many serious illnesses such as cancer, miscarriages, suicide and leukemia. There is plenty of information to justify taking prudent action to reduce exposure to man-made electrical pollution.
This pollution takes the form of:
These fields (energy in the air) come from wires in walls, electric cords, and ungrounded appliances like hairs extending into space. Electric fields are there even when there is no electrical usage i.e. when the electrical devices are off. The hairs of the electric field in space intersect with the human body producing a vibrating, unnatural voltage on the body. This condition never existed before electrification of the world. So remember when you turn off your bedside lamp at night, electric fields are still eminating from the wiring while you sleep.
These fields (energy in the air) occur when the power is on and the appliances are running such as the digital alarm clock next to your bed. When appliances like refrigerators are located on the other side of an adjoining wall, the magnetic fields will pass through the wall. Sources include electric blankets and waterbed heaters, fluorescent lights, light dimmers, the main electrical panel, the electric meter, refrigerator motors, transformers that are inside electronic devices and those little black boxes used to charge your cell phone or run your laptop computer).
Radio Frequency (RF) Fields
These fields are caused by any wireless device. Radio frequency signals from devices like portable phones, cell phones, wireless internet connections (Wi-Fi) and cell phone system antennas have been shown to interfere with your body’s functioning at the level of your cells. Interference with cellular functioning will affect the performance of all body systems including the immune system.
The Health Effects
Long term exposure to low levels of electric, magnetic fields and RF can have negative biological effects on our bodies especially for those most susceptible – children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. Mitigation can be as simple as moving electrical items away from the bed and/or shutiing off some circuit breakers. Or as complicated as having to install shielding to ward off RF from outside your home.
Common symptoms from exposure to electromagnetic pollution in the bedroom include difficulty sleeping, waking often during the night, allergies, nervousness, muscle pain, bed wetting in children, difficult concentrating, fatigue, depression, impaired healing and even cancer.
Whether or not you believe that EMR can affect health, what’s it going to cost you to make a few simple changes. They could make a big difference. People who have made these changes remark how well they sleep after these fields are eliminated. Here are a few simple things that IBE recommends to make your bedroom the sanctuary it should be.
Use battery devices near bed or move all electric devices at least 5 feet from the bed
Don’t use a wireless baby monitor.
Turn off all circuits that power the bedroom wiring or adjoining room next to or above or below the bedroom.
Eliminate or shield from RF energies – portable DECT phones, cell phones, other wireless devices and outside radiation from cell antennas and the neighbor’s wireless devices.
Make sure there are no elevated magnetic fields from electrical equipment near the beds.
Larry Gust, with Camilla Rees, Stephen T. Sinatra, MD, and Martin Blank, PhD, will be hosting a symposium on the impact of EMFs — How to Protect Ourselves and Growing Children from Electromagnetic Fields — on November 15. Visit the class page to learn more and to sign up.
