Best-Selling Author Deborah King’s Three Steps for “Knowing Yourself”
From Dark to Light: Your Path to Higher Consciousness!
By Deborah King
Ever feel like you’ve stalled on the road to higher consciousness? Your goal is to move up from the lowest qualities – where you’re mainly focused on your own physical survival, to your “higher-self” where you’ll live in the light, reflecting love and enlightenment on the world. How do you shift from survival mode, where it’s “all about me” to a place where you resonate with love, understanding that “we are all one?” Sometimes it takes a pretty serious wake up call to motivate you to move to that next level!
My own wake up call was pretty dramatic – I was a successful attorney in my twenties when I was diagnosed with cancer. While exploring my treatment options, I discovered alternative medicine and had an amazing remission at the hands of an energy healer. Along the way I tackled the alcohol and drug addictions that I’d been using to bury my abusive childhood. My life took a complete U turn after that! I left the corporate world for the mysterious world of healers, sages and shamans. There, I studied ancient and modern healing systems, and became the energy healer, spiritual teacher and New York Times bestselling author I am today.
The key to my own enlightenment, as well as something that gives me a tremendous amount of personal fulfillment, has been to help others face the untapped emotions from their past that are blocking them, just as they blocked me. The secrets, lies, and repressed feelings that we push down inside ourselves wreak all kinds of havoc. They’re at the root of so much that goes wrong in our lives – with our health, relationships, even our finances! Years ago, great philosophers advised us to “know thyself.” So how do you do that?
Explore your feelings – past and current:
When you start to dig into them, it may surprise you how much damage the feelings you’ve suppressed and the lies you’ve told yourself can do. I know I was. When I was able to finally strip away the delusions I’d had for years about my perfect childhood, acknowledged the abuse and how my mother had turned a blind eye to it, my whole life changed – for the better!
You can change your life too, by constantly being in the mind set of self reflection – figuring out how you feel about everything that happened in your past, as well as what’s happening to you right now. Start by asking yourself “why am I feeling the way I do”, “why am I upset” and looking for an honest answer within yourself. Once you get in the habit of exploring your emotions, you can start analyzing why you feel that way. Are your feelings realistic? Are you off base? Is there something you need to change? Are you reacting the way you are to something today because of events in your past? Honest, non-judgmental self-evaluation will do wonders for your own enlightenment!
Keep a journal of your feelings:
Once you are in the habit of exploring your feelings rather than pushing them down, make that focus a habit by journaling every day. Keeping your feelings bottled up inside causes all kinds of problems, and setting time aside for journaling gives you a structure and routine where you can document your feelings honestly, on your own terms. You can write with a pen and paper or on a computer, all that matters is that you write every day, and that you are 100% honest with yourself! Don’t hold back your feelings and don’t spell check!
You’ll find that meditation will allow you to take a huge step forward on your path to enlightenment! It’s amazingly good for you physically, mentally and spiritually. A big part of meditation’s success is its powerful ability to reduce and release stress. When you’re stressed it’s difficult (actually impossible) to focus your attention outward, because you’re stuck in “survivor mode.” Enlightenment happens when we get out of “survival mode” and focus our attention on other people. When I started my daily practice of meditation, I was experiencing a super stressful period in my life. I had only been meditating for 20 minutes, twice a day for a week when I noticed a change. I walked outside and actually noticed the world around me! It felt like I hadn’t actually seen it in months! For the first time, I noticed the flowers that had been blooming in my front yard for weeks.
Meditation will also assist you in removing any blockages that come from holding onto anger and resentment. Meditation clears your energy for what may be the most important part of the healing process, forgiveness. Forgiveness opens up our connection to other people and paves the way to enlightenment.
As you begin to successfully process your feelings and take the time to let go of old anger and resentment so you can live a more enlightened existence, don’t forget to forgive yourself for any past transgressions! You’re only human, so give yourself a hearty dose of compassion and move along – on your journey to higher consciousness!
