During this event two leading investigators in the field offer an overview of contemporary psilocybin research studies at Johns Hopkins, including findings on psilocybin for distress in cancer patients, for helping people quit smoking and in treating depression, as well as spiritual and wellbeing benefits in healthy volunteers. The role and effects of psychedelic-occasioned mystical experiences will also be discussed, along with a consideration of the broader history of the field, and its potential future impacts on mental healthcare and culture at large.

For almost two decades, MAPS (The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) has been conducting FDA-regulated drug development research into MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD in the United States, Switzerland, Israel and Canada. We have completed Phase 1 and Phase 2 studies and the first of two Phase 3 studies, with very promising results.

We’re also starting research in five countries in Europe and England for approval by the European Medicines Agency in England, Netherlands, Portugal, Germany, the Czech Republic and Norway. The FDA has awarded Breakthrough Therapy designation to MDMA-assisted Therapy for PTSD.

This evening will address the history of MDMA, our safety and efficacy data, information about mechanisms of action and our therapeutic approach and possible post-approval regulations. We currently anticipate FDA approval around the end of 2022 or early 2023. Approval in Europe would be a year or so later, depending on the availability of funding.

This unique series of evening presentations addresses the history of psychedelics from classical antiquity and among Amazonian shamans through current research investigating the therapeutic value of psilocybin, MDMA and other compounds for clinical applications including PTSD, addiction, existential distress in palliative care and clinical depression. Implications for the utilization of these novel therapies for the future of healthcare will be addressed.

We are living in the midst of a renaissance of research into psychedelic (or entheogenic) substances. Decades of promising research into their extraordinary benefits for numerous medical conditions were brought to a stop in the 1970s, amid the cultural turbulence of the era. In recent years, we have witnessed a reemergence of scientific and clinical research with promising findings at premier institutions including Johns Hopkins, NYU and UCLA.

At a time when we may be seeing the limitations of modern psychiatry’s medicine cabinet, these novel compounds and ancient medicines are in the process of returning to a status of respect and recognition within medical research. Many of those who take them under carefully controlled clinical research conditions report having extremely meaningful and therapeutic experiences, leading to promising implications for various forms of clinical suffering.

Join us as we provide a broad context and invigorating conversation for understanding these extraordinary substances, from their possible role in the mystery centers of Ancient Greece, their integral place among the indigenous cultures of the Western Hemisphere, and to their current place in modern medical research.

This evening will review the history, scientific findings and implications of psychedelic-generated mystical experience research in treating end-of-life suffering. The NYU clinical trial demonstrated the efficacy of a single psilocybin-generated mystical experience in helping individuals with cancer reduce emotional distress, enhance existential and psycho-spiritual well-being and foster a greater acceptance of the dying process with less anxiety.

Psilocybin is a naturally occurring compound found in specific species of mushrooms. Subjective features of a mystical experience include unity, sacredness, transcendence, ineffability and an enhanced awareness of positive emotions including that of love. The landmark findings of a rapid decrease in depression, anxiety, hopelessness and demoralization, along with improvements in spiritual well-being, will be presented.

We will discuss existential and psychological distress in palliative care along with a review of the phenomenology of mystical experience. Other implications for the study of psychedelics and mystical experience include the treatment of myriad mental health disorders and the advancement of our understanding of consciousness, meaning and spirituality.
