One coolish fall day back in 2014 I hopped on a train downtown for my very first day of Coaching school. I remember feeling the same nervousness and excitement that I used to feel on the first day of school when I was kid and thinking “this is it. I’m going to finally get certified as a coach, quit my job, and live happily ever after.”
It had all started some time before, when I hit a total stumbling block in my career. I felt lost and alone and then remembered someone that I admired who had become a life coach herself – so I decided to hire her. Not long after working with her on clarifying my vision for my path I had an epiphany. All signs pointed to coaching for me.
And it was perhaps the single most important decision I’ve ever made.
Unencumbered by what I perceived were the expectations of others for my life, I took this journey on. I found a whole new community of likeminded people from a diverse array of backgrounds that bravely took on this journey with me. We thought we were there to become coaches, but we didn’t know we would leave there 9 months later completely transformed. I finally connected to and gave voice to this yearning for healing that had been living in my heart for years.
My purpose became clear. Help people get liberated and live bravely.
And ever since, I have been on a roller coaster ride of planning, and trying things, and failing, and learning, and succeeding, and crying, and laughing, with this purpose in my heart. Slowly and steadily I’ve been piecing my practice together. I’ve had some incredible support along the way, from my business coach, loved ones, and from some brilliant members of my entrepreneur tribe. I am forever grateful.
One thing has become clear to me: the sacred relationship that is formed between a coach and client is a powerful vehicle for living out my purpose of helping people get liberated and live bravely. It becomes a safe space for clients to shed the layers that keep their dreams buried deep inside. It shines a light on the voices that keep you down and helps you trade places so that the voices instead serve your purpose. It’s a way to claim your dreams, own them, have them be rooted in your values, and confidently take steps forward towards realizing them. The benefit of coaching is having someone by your side as you go through transition and change. A coach can help you eradicate fear and self-doubt that come with change and can expedite the process of reaching results.
