Sit in the center of your life with the confidence that you can handle whatever comes up. Learning mindfulness, the practice of paying attention in the present moment without resistance or judgment can shift the course of our lives. Instead of being pushed around by our fears and hopes, we have the space to listen to ourselves and others, to pause, catch our breath, and respond to events wisely, rather than react automatically.
In this course we will discover key techniques of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction:
- The body scan, which takes us on our own fantastic inner voyage to attune to our body’s ability to be our compass and guide us in the world.
- Sitting meditation, which lays bare the impact of our thoughts and feelings and helps us break unproductive unconscious habits.
- Mindful yoga, designed to help us inhabit our bodies and move spontaneously.
We will also experiment with mindfulness while eating, walking, and communicating, and be asked to commit to practicing mindfulness while engaged in everyday activities. Come discover how living in the moment, with awareness and curiosity, can open up your life and fill it with peace and wonder.
Note: A $20 materials fee is paid to the instructor for CD’s or downloads. A 4.5 hour “silent retreat” class part of this course, is Tuesday, Nov. 14, 5:30 pm – 10:00 pm. Registration is required by October 1st in order to attend the workshop on October 3.

Joan Griffiths Vega, a lifelong meditator who trained with Jon Kabat-Zinn, the originator of MBSR, has been teaching Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction for 10 years at the Martha Stewart Center for Healthy Living, Mt. Sinai Hospital. With Patricia Bloom, MD, she developed the pain intervention model Mindfulness Based Pain Relief (MBPR). As a former family caregiver, she tailored an 8-week course particularly to support the needs and concerns of caregivers. Joan is a storyteller with an MA in cross-cultural mythology, Jungian and religious studies from Pacifica Graduate Institute, CA, and an MFA in film from School of the Arts at Columbia University.
