The concept of the “five elements” (wood, fire, earth, metal and water) as energetic archetypes whose cycles affect the flow of energy in our bodies is central to ancient Chinese medicine and to its qigong health exercises.
In this class, we will learn movements and breath control exercises to help unblock the acupuncture meridians and bring qi (energy) to the organs associated with each element, thereby assisting the body in reaching a state of balance and harmony, both on a physical and emotional/spiritual level. The lung exercise helps ward off colds and lifts one’s spirit; the stomach exercise can assist with digestive issues and relieve anxiety; the liver exercise can help alleviate irritability and pain; etc.
Come learn the essence of the Five Element Theory and an easy-to-learn exercise set that will help harmonize and balance your organs and accelerate your body’s natural healing abilities.
Note: No previous experience necessary; please wear comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement and flat-soled shoes.

“William’s Medical Qi Gong class is seriously the BEST!!! He demonstrates all the movements and explains everything clearly. The handouts make it easy to continue practicing at home. And best of all, it makes me feel energized and healthy. Try it and see how much better you feel.” – Rita Hubert
“I took the “Eight pieces of Brocade’ (Medical Qi Gong) last season at the Open Center that was taught by William J. Kaplanidis. William is an excellent instructor. He is very passionate and knowledgeable about Qi Gong. He made the class fun by sharing his personal stories. I personally benefited immediately from the set of therapeutic exercises that he taught, as I was able to regain movement in my right shoulder due to calcific tendonitis. I have been practicing since. I highly recommend his class.” – Christina Nickolas, Open Center Member
William J. Kaplanidis’ Qigong course is probably the best in NYC. I shopped around looking for a course and found the Open Center program to be the most enjoyable, practical and easy to make a daily habit. I took the course early this year and it still is part of my “start the day routine”. I plan to take his course again and have consistently recommended William to everyone who sees me doing the exercises and asked ‘Where did you learn that?'” – Robert A. Levit
“I have trusted greatly as my acupuncturist, my academic teacher, as well as Qi Gong instructor, and have greatly benefited from all three dynamics. My experience of William is a wisdom and breadth of tangible knowledge that I personally aspire to for its far-reaching capacity to help others. I practiced one of his custom-designed Qi Gong sets for 100 consecutive days, taking day 50 to get a one-on-one lesson for corrections, and it was the best I’d felt in years. I would highly recommend not only his classes, but their implementation into everyday life as an invaluable tool for self-improvement.” – David Foster
