The practice of herbalism has endless ways to harness the healing properties of herbs, from infusions to calming compresses. Learn ways to capture the therapeutic benefits of medicinal plants with, water, alcohol, vinegar, glycerine, and oil. This course will cover:
Sun Teas, Infusions and Decoctions
Learn which chemical compounds extract best in water, when to use hot or cold extraction, when to simmer or steep, and how to use water to harness the wisdom of the plant. We will also discuss the actions of herbs and how to compile some basic infusion formulas. Recipes and tastings are included.
Alcohol, Vinegar, Honey, and Glycerin Extractions
Discover folk tinctures, how professional tinctures are made, when and how to use vinegar, which herbs make good glycerites and how to make medicinal honeys. We will also discuss the actions of herbs and some basic formulations. Recipes and tastings are included.
Topical Preparations: Poultices, Compresses, Washes and Baths, Oils, Balms, and Powders
Learn about topical uses for herbal preparations, and which are useful for relaxing the nervous system, muscle skeletal issues, first aid situations, and skin repair. Discover the different ways of making alcohol based tinctures and alternative extraction methods, using glycerin, vinegar, and honey. Learn why one method of extraction may be preferable to another.

Herbalist, Dawn Petter teaches the art of plant based healing and the use of herbal medicine in one’s daily life. Trained at Arbor Vitae School of Traditional Herbalism, she serves in NYC as a clinical herbalist and flower essence practitioner. She teaches classes & leads herb walks at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, The 92 Street Y, Brooklyn Grange and the Rudolph Steiner School, amongst others. She is also the creator of Petalune Herbals, a resource for hand crafted herbal skincare and luxury botanical products.
