Pre-Columbian Spirituality, Culture, and Wisdom in Peru and Bolivia
in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca
August 22–28, 2018
The High Andes of Peru and Bolivia are some of the most mystical lands on the face of the earth, the birthplace of profound esoteric cultures that flourished with great sophistication for many centuries. Few places produce such awe and wonder as the mysterious Incan citadel of Machu Picchu, or generate such a feeling of serene expansiveness as Lake Titicaca.
The Open Center’s 14th Esoteric Quest—our first in South America—will take place primarily in the tranquil Sacred Valley of the Incas, not far from Cusco, next to the rushing Urubamba River, with its snow-capped mountain vistas. It will include a visit to Machu Picchu, truly one of the world’s most transcendent experiences, and two nights in Cusco itself, the capital of the Incan Empire, considered to be ‘the navel of the world.’
We will learn from writers, scholars and artists steeped in the wisdom of the ancient Andean cultures, and also participate in ceremonies with indigenous healers and paqos (shamans), intended to deepen our attunement to the mysteries of the living earth and cosmos, and the many beings who inhabit it.
An optional two-day Pre-Conference excursion in the Sacred Valley will visit the stone terraces and temples of such beautiful and elevating places as Písac, Moray, and Ollantaytambo.
• Lake Titicaca and Bolivia travels to the Island of the Sun (the birthplace of the Incan gods), and the pre-Incan ruins of Tiahuanaco. It concludes in La Paz where we will meet activists engaged in bringing Andean indigenous values—with a deep respect for Pacha Mama, Mother Earth, and an egalitarian ethic—into world awareness and practice.
• Cusco explores the city’s many surrounding ancient sites before traveling to Lima, visiting the remarkable Temple of Pachacamac and experiencing the vibrancy of contemporary Peruvian culture.
