Many of us would love to spend more time on self-healing practices, but the realities of our lives often leave us with little time for ourselves. Even setting an hour aside for meditation can be difficult when there seemingly aren’t enough minutes in the day for all of life’s daily tasks.
Yet here’s a simple practice that you can do in as little as five minutes!
Sit comfortably on the floor or on a chair with your spine straight. Concentrate on your breath and allow your belly to relax and expand with each inhalation and exhalation. Put your lips together with your teeth closed, but without clenching your jaw. Relax your tongue so that it is lying with the tip against your lower teeth.
Now, take several deep breaths and gently allow your vocal chords to come together in a soft hum. Concentrate on sending delicious vibrations down into your torso as well as vibrating your skull and bones. Notice how these sensations make your body feel.
Keep humming in a relaxed manner for as long as it feels good to do so. To conclude, sit in glorious silence for a couple minutes, in welcome peace.
A good time to do this is right after you wake up in the morning. Or, set aside a timer to go off in the middle of your day and take a time-out for rejuvenating humming.
No matter how little time you have, you can always give yourself a few minutes of self-love though sonic nourishment. When done regularly, you may be surprised at how simultaneously energizing and relaxing such a simple practice can be!
Joule will be teaching a 3-week series entitled Healing with Sound: Using Your Voice as a Tool for Self-Healing, beginning on Thursday, July 9th at 8pm.
