As a long time coach and coach trainer, I am always surprised when I get a fresh insight about coaching. I was surprised to hear myself last week saying these words to a coach-in-training. “A new facet or expression of your client is waiting to emerge every time you coach them.”
The coach asked me if I really believed these words. Did I really coach that way? What did that mean about coaches and the ways they interact with their clients and the world. My answer is “Yes, I do believe that. Every coaching encounter is an opportunity to find magic and new connection in the person or persons we are coaching. When we act from that knowing, we invite our clients to explore and step into previously unexplored parts of themselves. These may be unknown strengths waiting to be tapped. They may be areas that have been frightening or painful to look at. As coaches, we have the tools and capacity to welcome every expression of our clients and help them find creative ways to integrate and use them. Our clients are more whole and authentic and as a result are more effective in whatever they dream of doing in the world.”
I feel very lucky to have found coaching. The truth is, I didn’t think this way when I first started my coach training. It takes time to transform ourselves and become the person we were meant to be. One of the amazing things about coach training is that in addition to learning concrete, effective tools that take people from stuckness and disappointment to creativity and power, we also are trained to be different people who find possibility and magic in any situation.
I have a request and a challenge for you. Take five or ten minutes and find a dream for yourself or the world that you may have given up on. Bring it to one of our free introductory classes and see if you can find a new way of engaging with that dream. Whatever you discover, we want to hear what you are dreaming of and what magic you want to see in yourself and the world.
I’ll add one more thing. Coaching may start with dreaming and I love the fact that coaching takes dreams and brings them into reality. I am a completely different person than the one who walked into my first coaching class. Join us and make a difference in your life and in others.
