Do you ever feel inexplicably drained or bothered being around certain people, places, or objects? Are you frequently out of sorts, depressed, or anxious for no good reason? Are you prone to feeling a little spacey or wired up like you are full of static, but you’ve found no medical explanation for this? Do you often have floating pains or aches in your body or feel like you are not fully in your own “skin?” Do you have recurring nightmares or upsetting dreams?
Although there can be many causes for these symptoms, they could be signs of disturbances in your energy field. Types of energy disturbances include:
Negative energy transference, such as picking up negative energy from others that affects you. You may pick up the emotional state and have a hard time separating yourself from it or you take it on—-such as becoming angry after being around someone angry.
Energy leakage. More intense than energy transference, this may feel like your own energy is drained by this person, situation, or object. You feel wiped out or off in some way afterwards.
Energy cords connecting you and other people in your life. Energy cords can continue between you long after a relationship is over or even after the other has died.
Breaches in or attachments to the energy field caused by spiritual attack, curses or hexes, soul fragmentation, energy “residue” that remains in your aura long after a traumatic encounter, or lost soul attachments.
Ancestral issues that are still affecting your family lineage.
Past life issues in need of healing.
If anything in this list resonates with you, try not to feel overwhelmed! There are many underlying reasons why these energy issues happen, which we will explore in my workshop on “Simple and Effective Ways to Protect Your Energy Field,” on January 17th. The good news is that they can be resolved and healed with enough patience, practice, and commitment to your healing journey. Start by looking at energy disturbances as invitations from God, the “Divine Therapist,” who wants to help you get out of the “desert” within that may be preventing you from living a life of peace and joy. Accepting these invitations for healing begins by having the courage to start to dismantle our false selves, the facades many of us constructed in childhood to cope with unbearable pain that we could not otherwise endure, so that God has room to work in us. Trappist priest Thomas Keating writes in his book Journey to the Center: A Lenten Passage, “The biblical desert is not so much a geographical location—a place of sand, stones or sagebrush—as a process of interior purification leading to the complete liberation from the false-self system with its programs for happiness that cannot possibly work.”
Following a spiritual path of your choosing helps to facilitate this process by giving you spiritual teachers to guide you and a community of seekers to journey with you and help you stay accountable to yourself. Without making a real commitment to yourself in this way, all of the energy protection workshops in the world won’t be enough to give you inner peace and lasting relief from energy disturbances. However, God doesn’t expect you to instantly become a “saint in training;” God just desires for you to “show up” and work together at unpacking and releasing the load. Fortunately, while you are doing this, there are also several simple, effective strategies that you can apply to protect your energy field.
A powerful strategy to use before dealing with a problematic person or situation is to “send” love and light in advance, praying for the highest good for all, keeping your own ego and desires out of the way. God’s creativity in defining the highest good may astound you when you are able to do this with a sincere and pure heart! Another helpful strategy is to draw a Caim Prayer around you. To do this, stand with an arm fully outstretched, perpendicular to the floor. Slowly pivot in a circle, going clockwise (the same direction as the sun’s rotation), using your outstretched index finger to trace a “circle” of God’s love and protection around you. Then as you go through out your day, when you feel yourself getting anxious, tense or drained, remember that this circle of God’s presence enfolds you.
When in the midst of a difficult encounter, try “drawing” in your mind a sacred symbol that has personal meaning to you that you “place” between you and the person. For extra power, imagine that the symbol is on fire, but the flames can’t hurt either of you. They just help to keep negative energy from hitting your energy field. After the encounter, if you still feel a little jangled, “brush off” the other person’s energy, using your hands in a brushing/sweeping motion over your body, going from your torso outwards. “Shake” the energy off your hands with each sweeping motion. As you do this, consciously remind yourself that the energy being released belongs to the other person, not to you.
In my workshop, I’ll be sharing many more strategies that address energy protection both before and during a problematic encounter and also what you can do to rebound after a difficult encounter that you weren’t prepared for. We’ll also explore practices from Buddhist and Christian contemplative traditions that will help you learn to deal with energy disturbances in new and creative ways, using your own life stories and experiences as your sacred scriptures.
We were created to live lives in an energy balance. With practice and the courage to change, it truly is possible to do this, along the way, becoming both sensitive and strong, developing deep intuition while maintaining healthy boundaries, giving love and allowing ourselves to be loved, caring for our own needs as we care for others, cherishing who we are and our rightful place in the world.
