By Elizabeth Jenkins
The first time I spoke with a New York City Nature Spirit was in 1996 after I had received the publishing contract from Putnam for my first book, The Return of the Inka. The book seemed to be stalled on the publishing conveyor belt, so I went to speak personally with my editor in order to ‘grease the wheels’ a little.
Of course, having been trained for 15 years by Andean Priests I knew that before I traveled, I had to make an offering to living spirit of Avenue of the Americas…that was pretty much ‘publishers row,’ back then in New York City. Expecting to find oppressed Nature beings smothered under skyscrapers and thick asphalt I was shocked to perceive the incredible power of these beings who answered when I called to them during the Hayway (despacho) ceremony.
“What do you want?” boomed the voice of the Pachamamita of Avenue of the Americas. I reeled. Literally. She went on, laughing at me, “daughter do you really think this great center of creativity, commerce, and culture exists here in this place because we Nature Beings are weak?” I was stunned speechless.
“You humans are attracted to this land because of OUR power and you reflect OUR natures.”
This conversation certainly turned my regular point of view on it’s head. Yet, if one thinks about it logically certainly the Nature beings point of view makes a lot more sense. After all, they were here LONG before we arrived. Certainly it is the natural resources of a place that attract its human inhabitants, so why not the living energy of the place? We are drawn to the protection of a mountain with the lovely resources of a river flowing by. Perhaps then it is really not so odd, indeed only simple logic, that in the ANDEAN tradition the Spirit of the Mountain and River closest to which we are born are considered to literally be our Nature Being MOMs and Dads. They are said to hold the living energy of our destiny, and according to Don Humberto Sonq, one of the great Master Healers of the Q’ero community, “Without your connection to your Paqarina and Itu Apu, your power as a healer is practically ZERO!”
I happened to have been born in Manhattan at Mt. Sinai hospital, just a few blocks from the Hudson River. She is my Paqarina, a Quechua word that literally means “Nature Mom” and my Itu Apu, the mountain protector of my birth or “Nature Dad” is Great Hill near 104th street Central Park West.
This certainly would give an interesting explanation of what makes a “New Yorker” and why people often guess I am from New York even though I only lived there for six months after my birth. In June of 2012 I was invited to teach a class at the New York Open Center and took the opportunity to make a special pilgrimage to visit my Nature Being Mom (the gorgeous Hudson River) and my Nature Being Dad (Great Hill). One and half years later I can still barely articulate the power of that encounter and the integrative influence it has had on my writing and my work with the tradition. All I can tell you for certain is that in a few years I will be able to write “A Mystical Guide to New York City.”
I invite you all to think like an INKA! Consider the Inka’s cultural point of view—now confirmed by modern physics—that everything is living energy, including us and all of Great Nature. Contemplate upon the place of your birth and the living energy, the love, and the support that emanates from that location into your present day life, as well as your guiding star. Our guiding star, according to my Q’ero teachers, is a literal star in the sky, an energy door, through which our spirit came to this Earth. It is the door through which we will pass again when we die. These three sources of living energy are fundamental to our lives here on earth and supply the sacred dimension of our being.
