Certificate in Permaculture Design

Lead Teacher: Claudia Joseph

THIS PROGRAM WILL BEGIN IN JULY, A COMPLETE SCHEDULE WILL BE AVAILABLE SHORTLY.

Permaculture is a design system to create sustainable, abundant and efficient human habitats by integrating insights from ecology, organic gardening, indigenous practices, architecture, agroforestery and economics. Principals of science and economy intertwine with traditional wisdom to create desirable communities, dwellings and life-styles.

Permaculture can be described as "the big umbrella" of design. It is usefully applied in any field that involves human activity. Teachers, environmentalists, city planners, landscapers, health care professionals and many others can benefit from this common sense, solutions-based study. Broad topics include our elemental support systems: food, water, energy, shelter and waste. Earth care, human care and fair share are the three legs supporting this vast body of knowledge which can be applied immediately to our everyday sustenance and livelihood.

Permaculture can be implemented on all scales and in any location. This urban permaculture course varies from the traditional certificate program by offering more strategies for the urban environment. We will review in depth: water catchment systems, food resources, health, waste reduction, alternative economies, the use of public space, and home energy savings will be reviewed in depth. Natural building, forest management and off-the grid homesteading are ideas we will visit lightly. The multitude of questions and projects that people bring always play a role in the shape of the course.

In general, permaculture enables us to build human systems that are abundant, resilient and economical. Action follows awareness in this highly relevant design approach. Participants will learn to find right livelihood, save energy, build local networks, know more about their food, take political action, educate, and live a more resourceful life.

Four sessions will be field study and practice—there will be some walking, shoveling and other physical activity. The class will break into design groups and will explore, map and redesign the landscape at The Old Stone House in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn. The program ends with group presentations, a dinner and a final activity for which you must be present to receive your certificate. This course will benefit anyone wishing to take a positive stance in earth stewardship, at the leadership level or as an individual. Let’s embrace green principles and feel the renewal begin.
