"Carmen Robles Herrera, dancer and teacher extraordinaire! Her aura exudes passion, grace, and the divine pulse of life, as the Afro-Caribbean clave rhythms flow through her. Encoded from her African ancestors and passed on through her dancer parents. Pura alegria, sensuality, and healing surge from the core of her soul. Doesn't matter if she's partnered or sola, crowds circle around her, fixed gazes. They can't believe their eyes. Just watching her brings happiness. They want to learn to move like her and possess that free spirit. The teacher in her lovingly channels this connection for the body to find its inner joy of dance."
-Poem by Dr. Nancy Lemberger, NY.

by Carmen Robles Herrera, MSEd, MSW, LCSW

I was born feet first; my mother said the reason was because I was born to dance. The presence of dance is intrinsically a part of my existence. I believe that if I did not dance I will not be alive today.

There is movement to everything in the universe. Our own self healing instincts keep us moving in order to receive, release and share with our environment and our fellow men. The movement in dance is a fundamental source of communication, self-balancing, enlightenment, and self-expression; and therefore, empowerment. It is a wonderful tool in our search for guidance, clarity, support, and connection to our higher self’s. As we all become healthier, happier, and more conscientious of our uniqueness and the importance of our presence in this world, we also become aware of the importance of sharing with the world our own self in movement. This is our own unique dance.

I was blessed by being born in Puerto Rico and inheriting a culture where dance was always part of our everyday existence. We dance when a child was born, someone died, there was a birthday, a baptism, a confirmation, a wedding, an anniversary, etc. Dance was the venue to acknowledge a significant event. We believed that everyone could dance. Age, sex, or physical condition had nothing todo with the ability to dance. You could dance standing, sitting, or lying down.

I have realized that dance is like yoga; as long as you have the intention, you will receive its healing benefits. I compare dance to breathing. If you do not breathe you die and if you do not dance you die. In retrospection I now truly believe that when we do not dance a very important part of us is starved and eventually stops existing.

My work experiences include working with a major airline, teaching adults and children in the public school system, working in the field of social work in hospital settings, schools and mental health clinics and around twenty years ago I established a private practice as a psychotherapist which I still maintain.

I have traveled extensively, married, raised children, created DASHIMO™, and through every event, sorrow, and joy in my life, I have dance sometimes alone and sometimes with others. Dance has always been the propelling force in my life. It has been a blessing which I must share with others. In my workshops I am presently using popular Latin music. We learn basic movements, cultural background, instruments used, and other relevant information of rhythms like plena, merengue, bachata, son, cha-cha-cha, salsa, and others. I intertwine breathing techniques, yoga, energy balancing, and many other healing concepts.

The environment is very relaxed and non competitive and you get to laugh a lot and meet a lot of other wonderful people who love or are curious about dance. Everyone is able to participate and you do not need a partner to attend. It is important to dress very comfortably. I dance barefooted for healing purposes, which I will share with the participants. I encourage those who feel comfortable to dance barefooted as well. Shoes can be worn but it is important that they fit comfortably. The energy is very up and contagious; those who arrive feeling anxious, soon find themselves not able to stop dancing.

Professional dancers; who at times find themselves tormented about their performance, are very happy to be able to relax, get out of their head and learn to integrate more their bodies, feelings, and emotions into their dance. This in returns transforms their dance into a more expressive, alive and enriching experience. It is an honor for me to be able to share DASHIMO™ in many different settings; holistic centers, universities, hospitals, radio, television, etc. and with special dancing souls of all ages; children, adolescents, adults, and senior citizens.

I am living my passions. I am able to share with others how to manifest, share, let go of blockages and stressors, and celebrate their life.I hope one day we can meet and dance together. I honor your light and dancer within. I wish you peace and the freedom to be yourself and dance! Carmen Robles Herrera “The Dancer”.

“YOUR SUCCESS STARTS AT NEW YORK COLLEGE OF HEALTH PROFESSIONS”

If you are passionate about improving health and the quality of life for yourself and others…and want a rewarding professional career that’s more than just a job…your success starts here at New York College of Health Professions.

New York College has been pioneering Holistic Health Education for 30 years; merging thousand-year-old traditions of Eastern medicine with the future.

Chartered by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York, this institution’s history is filled with “firsts”: the first school approved by New York State to offer a degree in Massage Therapy, the first degree program in therapeutic bodywork in the U.S. and the first acupuncture and Oriental medicine program approved by the New York State Education Department!

New York College is a premier institution offering nationally accredited undergraduate and graduate programs in some of the fastest growing areas of health care. Institutionally accredited degree programs include Massage Therapy, Acupuncture, Oriental Medicine and Herbal Medicine. All prepare students to become licensed, successful health care providers. Additionally, the College provides continuing education in many fields such as Holistic Nursing for RNs, instructor certification in Yoga and Tai Chi, workshops in wellness, Reiki and more. It has provider status for continuing nursing education through the New York State Nurses Association.

The main campus is in Syosset, Long Island with additional locations in Manhattan now in midtown at the NY Open Center, as well as on the upper west side and in the SoHo/Chinatown area. There is also a facility in China where students can visit on 2-week cultural immersion trips.

The student body ranges from those looking to advance their education or adult learners looking to change or augment their careers. Students can attend part-time or full-time in as little as 2 days per week with convenient day, evening or weekend schedules. Financial Aid and scholarships are available to those qualified.

New York College has worked with major hospitals like Bellevue Hospital, Beth Israel Medical Center, North Shore/LIJ and others. It is on the cutting edge of world leading technologies in health care with a rich IP portfolio. The College Commencement ceremonies receive extensive coverage and have featured luminaries such as Shirley MacLaine and Al Roker.

Graduates from the College are able to work in hospitals, spas, resorts, on cruise ships, with sports teams –or like so many alumni – start their own business.

There is a future in health care for everyone. Health care is growing, and Holistic Health Care is the Future! A future where professionals are needed, respected and make a difference. New York College of Health Professions offers its graduates the security of being a licensed professional in one of the hottest, growing and rewarding careers in the world.

Students interested in more information or wishing to make an appointment at the Open Center can call 800-922-7337 x351 or attend an upcoming Open House. Dates and times and more details are posted on the College website www.NYCollege.edu.

Pacifica Graduate Institute

Starting this spring, the New York Open Center is pleased to announce that we'll be hosting two unique graduate school programs at our home base, 22 East 30th Street, offered by the Pacifica Graduate Institute. That renowned graduate school located in Santa Barbara, California, is dedicated to the study of depth psychology, mythology, and the humanities. Two of their degree programs are delivered via blended education, through a combination of online study and four residential visits to the West Coast each year. For the first time in their 35+ year history, they will be offering two of those residentials on the East Coast, right here at the Open Center.

Pacifica Graduate Institute's motto is anima mundi colendae gratia-for the sake of tending soul in and of the world. The MA/PhD degree in Depth Psychology with emphasis in Jungian and Archetypal Studies affirms Pacifica's mission through an in-depth engagement with the work of C.G. Jung and the post-Jungians. This area of study responds to Marie-Louise von Franz's visionary idea: "The real psychology is a psychology that is for everybody. It naturally includes the problems of clinicians, but is not concentrated solely on that area." Students in this program work with faculty mentors in studying the Jungian and archetypal theories and practices most applicable to healing, transformation, self-expression, and the development of consciousness.

The second degree program that will be hosted at the Open Center twice a year is an MA in Engaged Humanities and the Creative Life. Pacifica believes that the wisdom traditions of the humanities and depth psychology influence the arts and new media, and this influence and confluence can help inform and enrich the creative life. In keeping with Pacifica's mission, this program suggests there is no fundamental difference between engaging in art-making and soul-making, that we can tend to soul in the world by tending to our creative life in the world. The world itself has a creative life, manifested in the archetypes of the collective unconscious, whose symbols, images, metaphors, and movements are all the prima materia for the creative movement of humanity.
