Stephen Hirtenstein, MA

This workshop looks at the inner meanings of the Islamic tradition of the Green Man, al-Khadir or Khidr. Often associated with Elijah and St. George, this mysterious figure achieved immortality by falling into the fountain of Life. He is known as the esoteric teacher par excellence, the one who leads to true self-knowledge. There are many stories of his meetings with saints through the ages and how he gave them instruction.

After a general introduction, we will study one of the chapters in Ibn ’Arabi’s Meccan Illuminations, which is dedicated to the esoteric knowledge of Khidr and includes one of the most detailed and penetrating discussions of the topic, as well as accounts of their face-to-face meetings.
