Sufi Practices and Teachings for Inner Awakening

Andrew Vidich, PhD

In this series, we will be introduced to some of the core teachings and practices of Sufism which lead to inner awakening and spiritual realization. We will begin by learning one of the most fundamental practices—zikr, or inner remembrance—a devotional practice involving invocation and prayers to help one open their heart and realize the presence of God.

We will then explore the teachings of Rumi on Adab in which guidelines are given on how to live a conscious, pure, and awakened life.

And lastly, we will discuss the teachings of the great Sufi scholar Ahmad Ghazzali who beautifully outlines in his Sawanih the states and stages of inner union acheived through the contemplative practice of Mushahada (observation) in which one learns to see with the eye of the heart, thus dissolving the barrier between the self and the divine.
