This training is designed as the first, foundational year for students interested in eventually becoming certified homeopaths. It will provide 150 hours of classroom credits toward the national certification requirements. (To view the standards, visit www.homeopathicdirectory.org). It can, however, also provide a solid understanding of basic homeopathy and its history and philosophy for those not necessarily interested in pursuing a career in homeopathy.

Homeopathy is a therapeutic system of medicine developed by Samuel Hahnemann in the early 1800's. Classical Homeopathy is based on the law of similars: "Let like be cured by like." Hahnemann wrote his Organon of the Medical Art in 1810, the first real treatise on holistic healing. In it he defines "illness" as any condition that limits freedom and the genuine practitioner of homeopathy as someone whose "high and only mission is to restore the sick to health... in the shortest, most reliable and most harmless way."

This foundation year will impart a strong understanding of homeopathic philosophy coupled with a working knowledge of homeopathic methodology and its clinical application. The course will be taught by Susan Sonz, CCH, director of the NY School of Homeopathy. Susan's method of teaching includes the use of her own clinical case studies, supportive mentoring and personal attention. The course is enhanced by visiting teachers who are world renowned homeopaths. The curriculum will include:

*the use of remedies in many acute situations
*health issues for adults and children
*injury, travel, flu, anxiety and grief remedies.

The study of chronic disorders will also be covered along with the materia medica of many of the polycrests (the most famous remedies). You will learn to work with the repertory, and discover how to solve basic cases. Completion of the first year will give you a foundational knowledge of homeopathy and the tools to apply remedies in first aid and acute situations, and prepare you for the second year's deeper study of remedies in groupings.

The program will take place in ten workshops, one weekend a month. There will be a mid-term exam in January and a final in June. You will begin work with the practical application of homeopathy by seeing some exciting cases on paper, on video and in person. Each month there will be homework, which will include readings and remedy studies, along with written assignments on remedies, philosophy, homeopathic history and biographies.

Over the year, topics covered in class wil include:

* philosophy, principles and history of homeopathy: the study of Hahnemann's Organon and the
writings of early homeopaths
* basics of the nature of health, disease and cure
*comparing conventional and alternative medicine
*first aid homeopathic remedies
*acute homeopathic remedies
*materia medica of the polycrest remedies
*repertory work
*taking a homeopathic case
*observing clinical cases and solving basic cases
*introduction to chronic treatment
*remedy groupings and original sources
