Josh Michaell

"Sanskrit cannot be taught without great love, a deep understanding of the transformative beauty of sound, and the vulnerability to approach each moment as new. Josh Michaell is a rare teacher who has these qualities in abundance."—Vyaas Houston, Founder, American Sanskrit Institute

Impossible to translate! But by the end of a weekend, you’ll be reading this, savoring the precise pronunciation and pure energy of Sanskrit, and gaining direct access to the ancient wisdom of yoga encoded in this sacred language.

This workshop will teach us how to approach the study of Sanskrit as a yoga discipline that’s enjoyable and inspiring. Above all, enjoying sound will be at the heart of our time together. This weekend, we will learn how to: free our voices through chanting to allow the sounds of Sanskrit to unfold naturally and joyously; experience the five mouth positions of Sanskrit—essential to unlocking the power of the language; recognize and use with precision the fundamental qualities of Sanskrit sounds; learn to chant the primal "seed" mantras used to awaken and balance the chakras; and begin to read and accurately pronounce yoga-related Sanskrit words and a selection of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. We will also chant invocations from the Upanishads and a selection from sacred texts such as the Bhagavad Gita and Ramayana.

Come discover how, through precise pronunciation, the power and beauty of Sanskrit can come alive within you as it has for sages, poets and yoga practitioners throughout the ages.
