Heather Raffo

"I learned more about the situation of women in Iraq from Raffo’s one woman show than almost anything else I’ve read on the subject."
—Jennifer Fasulo, co-founder of Solidarity with Organization of Women’s Freedom in Iraq

"The female half of Iraq has come to America," declared Gloria Steinem of Heather Raffo’s highly acclaimed 9 Parts of Desire, a series of monologues of Iraqi women which ran for nine sold-out months at the Manhattan Ensemble Theater.

"I had the right mix," said Raffo, about the interviews on which her monologues were based. "I was half Iraqi so they opened up to me immediately, but I was also Western so they felt they could express fears or secrets that might otherwise be judged more harshly by someone from their culture."

Join us tonight as this electrifying actress and playwright recreates some of these monologues and shares what she has learned in the process of creating what John Lahr in The New Yorker called "an example of how art can remake the world."
