PART I

Perfume has the power to invoke passion, memories and emotion. Natural Perfumery is the art of creating scented treasures from essences which have been extracted from plants. In this three-day intensive class (Part I of a two-part training program), the basics of the craft of making your own natural perfumes and colognes will be explored.

Our curriculum will include: understanding how essences are extracted; the various categories of extracts; the use of appropriate diluents, utensils and specialized supplies; the science behind the sense of smell and "nose training"; understanding fragrance "families"; the concept of the perfumer’s brief; the use of chemical readouts; the use of intuition and artistic expression in perfumery; and more. Each of us will set up a workstation we will use all three days. Individual perfume kits, a wide array of essences from around the globe and our own plant tinctures we make on site will serve as our raw materials. This course is for beginners as well as experienced blenders and perfumers.

Note: There will be a materials fee of $90, paid directly to the instructor. This will cover all materials, including essential oils, absolutes, carriers, bottles and handouts.

Note: To qualify for the certificate of completion, participants must take Part II of the Perfumery Training, complete a take-home exam and submit three self-created perfumes for evaluation.

PART II

During Part II of the Natural Perfumery training, we will continue to hone our olfactory connoisseurship skills, practice recognizing perfumery scents, and learn how to make our products unique. The importance of quality ingredients and a focus on the creative process will be emphasized. We will further explore the wonderful and complicated nuances of perfume essences extracted from plants and make more of our own interesting extracts and tinctures as well as work with rare and exotic materials. Individual talents and scent preferences will be considered, as well as how to work towards our specific goals and market niches. Working from a perfumer’s brief and learning how to package and market our products will be introduced as well. Some class time will be devoted to preparation for the exam to be given three months after this class.

Note: There will be a materials fee of $90, paid directly to the instructor, to cover all materials, including essential oils, absolutes, carriers, bottles and handouts.

Note: This course is open to those who have taken Part I in August 2007 and July 2008 and to anyone who has studied perfumery and understands basic organoleptic evaluation and the various methods of structuring perfume. Students will receive a certificate of completion.
