Birth Doula Certification- An Introductory Training Part II PDF Print E-mail
Natashia Fuksman

Due to personal illness Ilana Stein will not be able to teach the Birth Doula Program.  Celeste Rachell will be teaching Part I and Natasha Fuksman will be teaching Part II.

The workshop is for anyone interested in assisting women and their families to have satisfying birth experiences. It uses texts and supplementary literature, videos, small group activities, hands-on practice and role-play to develop the theoretical knowledge and practical skills that a doula needs.

On completion of the workshop, participants will be able to describe the significance of birth and the role of the birth doula; explain the DONA International Code of Ethics; list the research-proven benefits of continuous support by a birth doula on obstetrical and psychological outcomes; describe the emotional and physical needs of laboring women and their partners; compare characteristics of laboring women who are and are not coping well; demonstrate comfort measures and optimal birth positions for laboring women; and analyze and describe the birth doula’s role when her client has an epidural, in prenatal and postpartum visits, and during a cesarean birth.

Prerequisite: The Childbirth Education introductory class on July 27. Childbirth educators, nurses with labor and delivery experience, midwives or midwifery students, those who have attended another birth doula workshop, are also eligible. Attendance at these Open Center workshops constitutes the first step in the process to become a certified birth doula with DONA International. Please see www.dona.org for more information on becoming a birth doula.
