Art is an expression of values and of sensory awareness. It involves the spirit and the body, the marshalling of energy, focus, discipline, play and the ability to be completely present. In this class, we will work toward connecting creatively and compassionately with our subject, investigate influences and traditions from around the world, and try to work through creative blocks. We will work toward representation and refinement, building upon solid fundamental abstract concepts. Given the empty space of the rectangle we will build solid structural form. Using charcoal and some pencil we will explore space, form, light, air, positive and negative shape relationship, proportion and the relativity of each touch, each mark. We will nearly always work from life, transferring our 3-D perceptions onto a 2-D surface. We will also explore inner geometry, honoring and expressing the presence of our subject. Fundamentally and primarily we will connect our eyes to our hands; to be more precise, our eyes to our bodies, mind, spirit, hands and then finally to paper. [More]
