This course is designed for students with some drawing experience who are interested in developing a deeper understanding of value (i.e. the relationship of light and dark in an image) and color in their work. We will begin with a review of basic drawing skills and then proceed to work with value in graphite, observing and recording lights and shadows. Our investigations will focus on developing the ability to see color as value, and on achieving a deeper understanding of color harmonies. We will then proceed to work with a variety of media—charcoal, colored pencil, and pastel—and a wide range of subject-types, including: still-life, gesture drawing, live models, and landscape and architecture during a day trip to the historic Cloisters.
