Tonight we celebrate the centennial of the birth of one of the 20th Century's most significant and influential thinkers on religion, Mircea Eliade, author of such groundbreaking classics as Sacred and Profane; Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy, Yoga, Immortality and Freedom; and Cosmos and History. Central to Eliade's thought is the conception that humanity possesses the ability to perceive the sacred in the everyday, something "archaic" humans had more direct experience of, but that we moderns can reclaim.
