Integrative Approaches to Bipolar Disorder-Full Workshop Print
Saturday, May 12 2007, 10:00am - 5:30pm
with a Special Emphasis on Traditional Chinese Medicine
We will begin our exploration on Friday by considering the biological basis of the DSM-IV diagnosis of bipolar disorder. We will review imaging studies and their correlations with behavior and diagnosis, along with neurochemical and genetic studies. We continue by examining the close relationships among phenomena with different diagnoses, including ADHD, Tourette's syndrome, autism, and bipolar disorder, and consider the regulation of mood, irritability and violent behavior in our culture and others.Building upon Friday's introductory session, on Saturday morning we will review conventional treatments for bipolar disorder, their usefulness, side- effects and failures. We then address non-pharmacological treatments. This includes the uses of micro-nutrients, homeopathy and herbal medicine (particularly Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, and indigenous approaches) to discover the alternatives to medication. We will also review psychotherapeutic and spiritual approaches to bipolar disorder including the uses of guided imagery, ceremony and ritual, narrative psychotherapy, family and group psychotherapy, and community-based interventions. On Sunday morning, we will do "in-theround" assessment and treatment planning, and complete the program with a demonstration of a particular technique for use with bipolar disorder.
