Many ancient African civilizations had a house of empowerment that was used by the community as the place to resolve important social, marital, familial and financial tensions. Among the Bakongo of Central Africa this place is known as the M’bongi. Unlike Western courts or psychological counseling contexts, where a person stands alone in his/her inquiry, in the M’bongi, every decision is arrived at by the whole community.
