The Garífuna are an ethnic group descended from a mix of Amerindian and African people, some 500,000 of whom survive in their Central American homeland, with as many as 60,000 now in the U.S.. Garifuna mythology teaches that herbs are endowed with unique healing spirits and that specific plant spirits can be invoked to help take care of specific illnesses.
