Karl Lorenzen

Sacred geometry has fascinated artists, scientists, and philosophers for centuries. In this 3-week online course, we will learn the traditional craft, vocabulary and “alphabet” of sacred geometry. Through lecture, demonstration, and walking through this meditative process together — using a bow compass, straight edge and pencil — we will experience first hand how to draw the Platonic Solids, other classical geometric forms, and beautiful Islamic tiling patterns. And we will construct 3D models of those shapes, transforming common paper plates into meditative objects of transcendent form.

The course material for “Meditations on Scared Geometry” is accessible to people at all levels of ability: no previous math or art experience is required.

NOTE: Students must have access to a computer with a web browser for this ONLINE ONLY course, and may need to download free software to use some course features. Password-protected access to the course website is permitted only during the dates that this course is being held; PASSWORDS WILL BE ISSUED THE NIGHT BEFORE THE COURSE BEGINS; and user accounts will be deleted once the course is over. Audio-visual materials on the website are not downloaded but streamed through the web browser. Open Center Online Learning courses give students access to teachers and other students through several interactive tools on the course websites.

We will explore how Alexandrian learning and spirituality changed the course of world civilization, and their relevance today. David Fideler, now based in Sarajevo, was editor of the journal Alexandria: Cosmology, Philosophy, Myth and Culture. His books include Love’s Alchemy and the forthcoming Nature’s Intelligence.

These words were the names of the Neteru (gods and goddesses) which flow into the natural world. This workshop looks at the many sacred forms that divinity takes in the natural world through what we know as the symbols and myths of divine beings. As we explore this, we can tap into dream realms, the secret longings of the heart, and the power of Logos in image and in sound. Ancient Egyptian magician/healers understood that all is vibration and that the frequency of vibration determined the form of spiritual substance. They developed a system for understanding the Nine Subtle Spiritual Bodies, which were contained within the Material Form, thus making ten bodies in all. These ten bodies are akin to the sephiroth of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. Each of these bodies is explained in the Egyptian Book of the Dead. The Tarot, ostensibly a deck of decorated cards, is in fact a symbolic system whose images express Pythagorean, Platonic and Hermetic mystical ideas. Once one grasps the Tarot’s philosophy and structure, the cards can be used as an intuitive device to connect with one’s inner wisdom. In this class we will study the symbolism of the Tarot as its Italian Renaissance creators intended, come to understand its spiritual messages, and then learn and practice techniques that develop our intuition and enable us to read the cards as messages from our Higher Self.

Note: Bring a Tarot deck (the Waite-Smith or one of Robert Place’s decks) and some unlined paper.
