In this workshop, Pat Moffitt Cook, a pioneer in the field of indigenous sound and music healing, explores indigenous and traditional cross-cultural therapeutic techniques and sound/music repertoires. Sound and music have been used successfully in indigenous cultures throughout history to intercept illness, control pain, and aid emotional catharsis through relaxation and stimulation. In traditional cultures the conscious use of music has been proven to promote physical well-being and to create spiritual connection. In addition, in many indigenous cultures, sound plays a primary role in the death and dying process. Through experiential practices, demonstrations, dyad and group experiences and discussion, students in this workshop will investigate how sound and music are used as diagnostic tools, healing agents and connectors to spiritual domains and how each of these elements creates and constructs a dynamic healing session. An emphasis is placed on trans-cultural themes and addressing the needs of multiethnic client/patient populations.

“Butterfly Against the Wind” is based on the artist/filmmaker Jadina Lilien’s impressions of being in South Dakota on the Cheyenne River Reservation. At the invitation of Tiokasin Ghosthorse (WBAI Radio in NYC: First Voices), Lilien was invited to take photographs on this reservation where he grew up. The work made during this period, a series of digital pigment prints that utilize a multimedia photographic process, is a direct result from the artist’s time spent during these visits. The photographs incorporate the time bound documented images of the romanticized Indian and the present day conditions of the reservation. There are varying degrees of adding additional painting or “mark making” to the photographs. This process at times can be almost undetectable, enabling the image to be clearly visible, or at times, selectively obscuring the image, and creating a new narrative. www.jadinalilien.com

We will learn basic and advanced fingering techniques that will allow us to create beautiful songs, with no knowledge of music theory needed. We will discover how easy it is to use different blowing techniques to enhance our playing and create songs that will help us bring healing and peace to ourselves and others.
