“R.D. Chin brings such enthusiasm and expertise to his practice that we’re honored to be working with him at both the in-house and online levels here at the Open Center. He explains core concepts in an accessible way that makes you hungry for more no matter where on your educational journey you currently are.” —A.S.

Feng Shui is an ancient art developed over three millennia ago in China. It is a complex body of knowledge that reveals how to balance the energies of any given space to assure the health and good fortune for the people inhabiting it. Urban Feng Shui applies these principles to apartment and city-living contexts.

Applying the theory and principles taught by RD's teacher and mentor, the late feng shui HH Grandmaster Lin Yun, this class will give you the tools you need to transform your personal space and, importantly, the mindset that goes with it. This 4-week online course combines Western design principles with Feng Shui to align any space with dimensions of spirit, character, and a feeling of balance. This class is great for both the lay person as well as the budding Feng Shui consultant.

Nonduality—the basic teaching of Buddhism, Vedanta and Taoism—denies that an “inner” self confronts an “outer” world. It views the dualistic divide between seer and seen, knower and known as the root of suffering because our usual sense of being a self separate from other humans and the rest of the natural world is a delusive mental construct that condemns us to existential insecurity and loneliness. In this full-day work-shop we will use meditation, contemplative inquiry and discussion to explore the nature and implications of nondual experience, paying special attention to the habits of perception, thought and action that permit the illusion of separation to thrive, and how to move beyond them to awaken to the profound realization of our connection to all of life.

Normally we harden and react in response to fear, causing harm to ourselves and others. We will discover how through meditation practice, which teaches us to relax with our experience as it is, we can learn to face our fears with gentleness and curiosity. In this way the experience of fear can become a pathway to tenderness and greater humanity, leading to loving kindness for ourselves and our world. The class will focus on how we can relate personally to these teachings and apply them to our lives, and will include guided meditation practice and discussion. There will be assigned readings each week.

The Vietnamese Buddhist monk, poet and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh is one of the most important spiritual teachers of our time. In this class we will immerse ourselves in his teachings and meditative practices. Each week we will watch a video of one of his dharma talks on topics such as dealing with difficult emotions; living mindfully; cultivating joy, peace and compassion; and the practice of presence. We will then work together, as a community, and engage in mindfulness practices designed to help us experience the inner meaning of these teachings and enable us to carry them with us in our everyday lives.

Note: Recommended readings by Thich Nhat Hanh: Happiness: Essential Mindfulness Practices and Creating True Peace.
