“R.D. Chin brings such enthusiasm and expertise to his practice that we’re honored to be working with him at both the in-house and online levels here at the Open Center. He explains core concepts in an accessible way that makes you hungry for more no matter where on your educational journey you currently are.” —A.S.

Feng Shui is an ancient art developed over three millennia ago in China. It is a complex body of knowledge that reveals how to balance the energies of any given space to assure the health and good fortune for the people inhabiting it. Urban Feng Shui applies these principles to apartment and city-living contexts.

Applying the theory and principles taught by RD's teacher and mentor, the late feng shui HH Grandmaster Lin Yun, this class will give you the tools you need to transform your personal space and, importantly, the mindset that goes with it. This 4-week online course combines Western design principles with Feng Shui to align any space with dimensions of spirit, character, and a feeling of balance. This class is great for both the lay person as well as the budding Feng Shui consultant.

“The information Drew provides is invaluable to anyone aware of the connection between diet and sustained health, along with the happiness that brings. Every sentence he utters is a piece of practical advice that you can begin to implement immediately to change your life dramatically for the better.” —M.B.

Chinese medicine is one of the world’s great biological systems of understanding, with an unbroken tradition going back thousands of years. Chinese herbal medicine, along with the other components of Chinese medicine, is based on the concepts of yin and yang. It aims to understand and treat the many ways in which the fundamental balance and harmony between the yin and yang may be undermined and the ways in which a person's qi, or vitality, may be depleted or blocked. Clinical strategies are based upon diagnosis of patterns of signs and symptoms that reflect an imbalance.

In this four-week online course, Drew DiVittorio will walk you through basic processes of diagnosis and remedy that anyone with access to a grocery store will find both inspiring and instantly accessible. The strategies learned in this class can help to bring your body into harmony, creating less potential for discomfort and disease and more opportunities for health.

Sharon Smith

Taoist Inner Alchemy views the physical body as a kind of a laboratory in which our inner energies, the “Three Treasures” of jing (original reproductive energy), chi (natural energy), and shen (spiritual energy), can be gathered, cultivated and refined to generate greater vitality, health, happiness and, ultimately, for the assiduous practitioner, the “return to the Tao” (or immortality) through the birth of the “immortal child within.” In this class we will be introduced to some of the foundational practices of Taoist Inner Alchemy, including: “Opening the Microcosmic Orbit,” a sitting meditation that helps us enhance and balance energy flow in the body’s main energetic pathway; standing qigong grounding and rooting practices that strengthen the muscular/skeletal structure and provide a strong supportive connection to the earth; and the melting of blocked sexual energy for rejuvenation and to begin the “rebirth” process.

We’ll practice a variety of easy-to-learn but powerfully effective sitting, standing and moving exercise and meditation practices which use the breath, posture, and power of the mind to increase our vitality and awareness, lubricate our joints, stimulate qi flow in our organ systems, set up a positive emotional disposition for the rest of our day, help decrease pain, and accelerate healing from a wide range of ailments. Among other benefits, studies show qigong can lead to a strong improvement in spiritual, physical and mental health, evidenced by synchronized brain waves, reduction in stress hormones, and increases in energy.

Primordial (or wuji) Qigong is an 800-year-old Taoist practice, transmitted to Michael Winn’s teacher by a 106-year-old Taoist from Wudang Mountain. The 15-minute form integrates qigong, t’ai chi, Feng Shui, I Ching and inner alchemy principles to gather life force energy from the five sacred directions in three beautiful spirals. Its graceful movements resemble t’ai chi but are much easier to learn and are designed to generate spiritual rather than martial power, and can quickly produce sensations of enormous vitality. Primordial Qigong offers us a joyful, healing and empowering movement ceremony that returns us to the vital and uncorrupted energy of our original state.

William J. Kaplanidis, LAc, MS, MA

The concept of the “five elements” (wood, fire, earth, metal and water) as energetic archetypes whose cycles affect the flow of energy in our bodies is central to ancient Chinese medicine and to its qigong health exercises. In this class, we will learn movements and breath control exercises to help unblock the acupuncture meridians and bring qi (energy) to the organs associated with each element, thereby assisting the body in reaching a state of balance and harmony, both on a physical and emotional/spiritual level.
I-Chuan (also known as Da Cheng Chuan) is a remarkable martial art developed in its modern form by Wang Xiang Zhai in the 1940s, but its core practice, the art of standing meditation (zhang zhuang), is ancient. Standing meditation can generate remarkable energy, if it is done correctly. The resulting vitality can be the root of martial prowess or, far more important, can help us overcome illness, regenerate our nervous systems, enhance our immunity, give us increased daily energy, and permit us to achieve high levels of wellness and inner strength. Join Fong Ha, one of the few I-Chuan teachers in the West, well known for his power, graciousness and cosmopolitan charm, as he teaches us these deceptively simple but incredibly effective methods of inner cultivation.
