Jam Ja Band, formed in 1998 by Yoruba scholar and priest (and a percussionist with 48 years’ experience) John Mason, has performed widely at prestigious cultural institutions including The American Museum of Natural History and Yale. Mason is first to take traditional, ritual Yoruba song lyrics praising the orisa in Cuba, Brasil, and the United States, and translate them into English, while retaining the original idea content, aim, and melodies of the songs. Tonight’s concert will focus on music and songs in praise of feminine power and will include some of NYC’s leading jazz and classical musicians. Come be inspired by the powerful rhythms and melodies of West African traditional music, which have had such an impact on modern popular music.

This evening, Amir Vahab and ensemble will perform songs selected from the poetry of the great Sufi masters Rumi and Hafiz and other legendary mystical poets—to transport us to 13th century Persia with all its beauty and exoticism. The ensemble will also perform lively traditional music from Persian, Turkish, Kurdish and other sources featuring the mystical reed flute, ancient lutes, and the daf drum. The concert concludes with a dynamic drumming performance that echoes the universal heartbeat of existence.

This evening the author of an acclaimed biography of George Harrison, Joshua M. Greene, will be joined by renowned singer/ guitarist Godfrey Townsend as they present a tribute to George Harrison featuring live music, film clips, narration and a rarely seen filmed interview of Harrison in his later years. They will trace Harrison’s rise from the streets of postwar Liverpool to the summit of pop stardom, his discovery of spirituality in the ragas of Ravi Shankar and his efforts to bring the other Beatles along on his journey to self-realization. Professor Greene will also examine the role that yoga and chanting played in Harrison’s post-Beatles musical compositions, while Townsend provides performances of the songs to illustrate that influence. Don’t miss this fascinating evening that celebrates the most spiritual of the Beatles and offers a unique lens through which to view his crucial but rarely examined role in the phenomenal rise of yoga culture in the West.
